Violet Barclay (1922-2010)
was working as a restaurant hostess when a former classmate, Mike Sekowsky, got
her work at Timely (later Marvel) Comics as an inker. She left Timely in 1949
and freelanced, working for various publishers mainly working on romance
comics. She left comics in the mid 50s and worked in fashion illustration, and
continued to study art throughout her life. John Singer Sargent was a favored
artist of hers, and she recreated his painting (unable to afford originals),
signing her own name to avoid any accusations of forgery.
